ExpressionEngine uses a special wiki syntax to perform a set of actions directly on the wiki. The actual formatting is done by [[TextileSyntax | Textile]]. (have a look on the external page too "Textism: Tools: Textile":http://textism.com/tools/textile/index.php)
 
This is only a very short introduction. If you want to learn the more advanced textile features, the [[TextileSyntax]] wiki page has all the information for you.

The optimal depth corresponds structure and size of the article. For a short article a toc is absolutely unnecessary.

== Character Codes, or How to Bypass the Wiki Formatter ==
 
Sometimes you need a character in your wiki article that the wiki engine thinks is a formatting code. When this happens, replace the character with a code for the character. "Here is a good list of such codes":http://www.degraeve.com/reference/specialcharacters.php.
 
For example, in Textile the percent symbol (&amp;#37;) indicates a <span> tag in HTML, but you may need to show a &amp;#37; in a command line example. Use &amp;amp;&amp;#35;37; instead of &amp;#37; in your example:
