The Qt Project Goals help the Qt Project community - both contributors to and users of Qt - to focus on activities that we believe to be the most crucial for the near future. A goal is something that the Qt Project focuses on as a community - something that cuts across modules, and benefits contributors and users broadly. It could be about features, quality, tooling, contributor experience, platform support, documentation, or anything else that matters to the health and direction of the project.

This is inspired by the KDE Goals process, and we adapt the idea, structure, and process largely from there. We specifically want to make sure that every Goal has Champions, i.e. one or more community members who are the face and primary drivers of a goal, from the initial proposal through to its conclusion.

Process

• Phase 1: Submission
  • Anyone with a Qt Account can propose a Goal by creating a ticket in JIRA
  • Goals are in Draft state
  • The person creating the Goal becomes the goal's Champion. Other people can suggest themselves as co-Champions, or add themselves as contributors

• Phase 2: Refinement
  • We focus on improving the existing proposals; no new proposals may be added at this point
  • Anyone with a Qt Account can add themselves as contributors
  • The Champion(s) decide when the proposal is Ready for Voting, or whether a proposal needs to move back to Draft state

• Phase 3: Voting
  • Only proposals in Ready for Voting state are considered
  • Anyone with a Qt Account can add one vote to any number of proposals
  • Voting is not anonymous

• Phase 4: Selection and Announcement at Qt Contributors Summit
  • The top 3 goals are selected based on number of votes and number of contributors
  • The Qt Project Chief Maintainer oversees the selection and decides in case of a tie

= Timeline for Goals 2026-2028

We start the Goals process in 2026, use the time until the Qt Contributors Summit to propose, refine, and vote for goals, and then announce the 3 focused goals at the summit in Oslo. Those goals will then be "in focus" until the Qt Contributors Summit in 2028.

• July 16th-August 30th: Submit your goal proposals
• September 1st-15th: refinement of proposed goals
• September 15th-October 19th: Voting open
• October 28th: Goals for 2026-2028 announced at Qt Contributors Summit in Oslo

We are using Jira for submitting Goal proposals and for managing the voting process; not everything will be perfect, but it will be transparent.
